Be aware that some unscrupulous mechanics and representatives of name brand manufacturers will often attempt to make you feel as if the only oil you should use is their "private label" oil. They will even state or insinuate that using any other oil will void the warranty on your vehicle. Just so you know, here are the facts:
1) Per the Magnuson-Moss Act passed by Congress, manufacturers may not require the use of their own lubrication product unless they also provide that product free of charge to all of their customers. (How many do you think actually do that?)
2) Generally speaking, "private label" oils are NOT designed and made by the equipment manufacturer. They are simply packaged by an independent oil company for the use of the manufacturer's customers. Often, lab tests show that these oils are of inferior quality. This is not surprising, as the "low bidder" often wins the right to produce the "name brand" oil and cuts corners to turn a better profit on his low bid. Remember this the next time a mechanic starts to blow smoke your way!
3) The manufacturer of the oil is the one who actually provides the warranty for failure of the oil. As long as the oil provided by the oil manufacturer matches the viscosity and service specifications made by the engine manufacturer, the engine manufacturer may not legally void your engine warranty. If engine parts fail prematurely, then the engine warranty kicks in. If an engine inspection reveals that the lubricant itself failed, then the oil manufacturer's warranty takes over. Either way, as a consumer, you are well protected.
The bottom line is this: Use the right viscosity oils and use them in accordance with the oil manufacturer's recommendations - and don't believe everything you are told about private label oils!
